What is Manuka honey?
Manuka honey’s antibacterial properties are what separate it from traditional honeys. Most honeys are believed to have some degree of bacteria-killing properties. This is because they contain the chemicals that produces hydrogen peroxide. In 1991, the Honey Research Unit in New Zealand conducted a study revealing that when they removed hydrogen peroxide from a range of honeys, only Manuka honey retained its ability to kill bacteria. This is due to the presence of Methylglyoxal (MGO), an ingredient unique to Manuka honey from the nectar of Leptospermum scoparium. Researchers found an additional antibacterial property in Manuka honey, often referred to as Non Peroxide Activity (NPA).
Typically, every jar of Manuka honey bears the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) quality mark. UMF is a quality trademark issued to all registered licensed beekeepers, producers and exporters of genuine Manuka honey. On the label of any Manuka honey product, you will notice numbers such as 10+, 15+, 20+ or 25+. These numbers indicate the levels of MGO and DHA present in the honey. The UMF honey test also looks for Leptosperin – a Manuka specific chemical. Leptosperin is stable over time and only exists in Manuka nectar. The presence of Leptosperin provides an absolute assurance that the product is genuine.
Furthermore, manuka honey with the highest UMF ratings is the most potent in terms of some important health benefits. They have highly antibacterial properties and are able to fight off dangerous infections. However, there is no conclusive evidence to suggest that high-potency Manuka honey would be any better compared to lower-grade honey. Middle-grade manuka honey is most often used in skincare and health purposes and is for short-term consumption (UMF 10+ or higher). Lower-grade manuka honey (UMF 5+) is the perfect choice for daily consumption.
Besides, Kordel’s Signature Manuka Honey is the 100% premium and authentic New Zealand honey with MGO and UMF grading system that appraises natural markers found in Manuka honey. In addition, only a jar labelled Manuka Honey with the UMF or MGO rating guarantees that your Manuka honey is genuine, plus the levels of antibacterial activity. Hence, you do not need to burn a hole in your pocket with Kordel’s Signature Manuka Honey 10 +. It is an inexpensive choice of a high quality and authentic Manuka Honey.
