Lutein is a yellow pigment that belongs to a group of antioxidants called carotenoids. It is related to beta-carotene and vitamin A. Lutein is known as a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that protect human’s body and especially the eyes in numerous ways.
Lutein is one of two major carotenoids found in the human eye (macula and retina). It is thought to function as a light filter, protecting the eye tissues from sunlight damage. Lutein decrease the light exposure, thus decraese the retina and lens degeneration. It scavenges the reactive oxygen species (ROS), then lower the danage of cellular and protect the optic nerve. Lutein also helps in enhancing the vision sharpness and colourful as increasing the Macular Pigment Optical Density (MOPD) level.
